Description
The ICR Iowa Advanced Manufacturing Sector Board recently launched a new, creative approach to increasing awareness about careers in the manufacturing industry. Through a partnership with Vernon Middle School, the Kirkwood Auto Cad class, and New Leader Manufacturing, the sector board has been able to give students the unique opportunity to experience manufacturing from the generation of an idea through final product creation in the hopes that several will consider manufacturing for their future career.
Deliverables
1. Open the eyes of students to a wide range of manufacturing career pursuits through exploration on the Manufacturing career website https://explore-manufacturing.org. 2. Meet local professionals in the field of manufacturing to allow students to picture themselves in a new role. 3. Students are able to learn, grow and create their own manufacturing product from idea to finished product. 4. Students will have a finished product to display in their classroom

What Business Partners Will Provide
Business partners will go into the classroom twice and then provide a company tour. First classroom visit: involves an overview of the manufacturing industry and careers available. They also introduce the concept of creating a design. Second class visit: involves helping students fine tune their hand drawn designs so that they can be easily transferred into the computer program and eventually laser cut into metal. Before the site visit: The designs were placed into Solid Works and transferred to New Leader Manufacturing to eventually be cut out of metal. On site visit: Vernon middle school and Kirkwood students will met in person to tour New Leader Manufacturing and see their designs being created.
What Schools Will Need To Provide
The opportunity for students to utilize some type of drawing program (Google Draw, AutoCad) and 2 dedicated class periods for presents to come in. Time in class for the groups to work on their design and then a class period for a tour.
